Accidents do happen, and Dental Trauma is the most common condition that inflicts mostly children. Physical activities such as contact sports like ball games (basketball, soccer, baseball) and fight games (martial arts, wrestling) are the usual cause of dental trauma, even among adults. Eating hard food or drinking hot liquid also causes such condition. Immediate treatment should be given to a person experiencing dental trauma to prevent its further worsening.

What is Dental Trauma?
Dental Trauma, as defined by most dentists, is a condition which injuries involved includes the entire mouth cavity: the teeth, gums, tongue, lips and jawbones/inside the cheeks. This is characterized by broken, fractured, or totally avulsed tooth. Study revealed that physically active boys are more likely to have dental trauma than girls, in the ratio of 2-3:1.

Kinds of Dental Trauma
Fracture Dental treatment may vary according to the severity of the fracture. Some cases such as slight cracks of tooth enamel may or may not require treatment. However, smoothing the fractured surface of the enamel is necessary. According to research, dental fractures are 82% maxillary teeth. Fractures are distributed among the central and lateral and canine teeth. Dental fractures are usually caused by intensive force, enough to have the enamel and/or dentin of the tooth disrupted. Tooth fractures are categorized according to the intensity of condition:
(a) Crown fracture occurs when only the dentin or enamel is affected (also referred as infraction),
(b) Root fracture occurs in anterior part of the teeth, caused by excessive direct trauma, and
(c) Alveolar Process Fracture occurs when the alveolar bone, that which supports the teeth is broken. Usually, this phenomenon greatly affects the particular tooth/teeth supported by this bone, leading to further dental problems.

Avulsion occurs when the tooth is completely severed out of its socket due to trauma. Maxillary anterior is usually affected by this condition since it is the most vulnerable or exposed part. An avulsed primary tooth needs not to be reimplanted because it will be replaced with a new tooth, while an avulsed permanent tooth needs reimplantation as soon as possible.

Extrusion or Lateral Displacement (also known as Luxation) This is a dental injury in which the tooth is forced out of its natural placement in its bony socket. Intruded primary tooth is often left without dental treatment to have it reerupt by itself. If the permanent tooth is affected, repositioning the tooth through dental splinting should be done. Dental splinting is treatment in which a device is employed to an affected area to immobilize the displaced or fractured tooth to encourage restoration.

Intrusion Intrusion is the inward projection of a tooth. This dental trauma is considered as the worst type because it affects several parts of oral cavity: the alveolar bone, periodental ligament, and the nerves in it. The intruded tooth is wedged or packed in into the alveolar bone, breaking the alveolar socket. Worse, it pushes the periodental ligament, shoving the tissues and nerves on the process.

Subluxation also known as dental concussion, subluxation is a mild injury causing the periodental ligament. It may or may not result to tooth displacement and bleeding at the margins of the gums.

Dental Trauma calls for immediate and appropriate dental treatment to prevent the worsening of the condition or to save the teeth. Proper treatment varies according to the type of dental trauma. One must always bear in mind to consult only to professional and certified dentist that knows well the language of dentistry for a guaranteed successful treatment. However, as what was being told since the ancient time that prevention is better than cure. Wearing mouth guards during intensively physical activities or sports is of great help.
